World-OPs

Channel #World-Chat has some of the finest Ops and Voices on Rizon, all working together to monitor the channel, teach the newcomers, and train new ops and voices. To get to where we are today, most of us started out as newbies just poking around, and found ourselves baffled by a colorful chat program called a client.

Op/VOp Information

Through one way or another, we stumbled into #World-Chat and found the channel to be full of energy, well-monitored, and best of all -- we were helped by the staff to learn more about Internet Relay Chat, or IRC. We liked the atmosphere, made friends, eventually learning enough to become an authorized assistant, or HOP. After training and experience we moved up to the @, or Op position.

This particular section contains references that are helpful to us as Ops. We hope this information may also be helpful for someone managing other channels and needing general 'how-to' tips. Also available is a wide variety of information directly related to holding the @ in a busy channel.

Being a +v in #World-Chat

We are often asked how to become a VOP or Op of #World-Chat, and while no two people are alike, most of the +V's/@'s selected have similar qualities. #World-Chat benefits from people that enjoy spending time in channel, and are able to share their enthusiasm about IRC with others. Cordiality, friendliness, and a willingness to learn new skills are also valuable traits.

There is much more involved, of course, but if you are interested in becoming a ranking member, and using your skills to benefit others that visit #World-Chat, a good place to start would be to browse through our Tutorials and familiarize yourself with as many of the IRC basics as you can.

If you're not intimidated by the amount of learning that will be taking place, and you are still interested in becoming a part of our HOP Program, you might want to test your skills through a little mini-test that He-Man have put together. Here you will find a view of what we cover during our classtimes. You may download this file, Mini Test, or visit the test webpage and test your knowledge. Feel free to use this as a study guide. Even us old timers might benefit from reviewing this test of knowledge from time to time 😊 You can request the answer key through any of these people in #World-Chat: He-Man, Future, George-Bean, Frambuesa and Jae.

Becoming an OP in #World-Chat

What We Look for in a Voice for #World-Chat To summarize our philosophy, we look for people with the following attributes:

Requirements for Prospective +v's

  • Should be a regular #World-Chat visitor
  • Must have home connection
  • Enjoys chatting with newcomers
  • Enjoys learning new tips about their IRC clients
  • Is willing to share knowledge (cordially) with others

The Channel's Bot (BattleCat) will monitor the regulars in the channel for those that they feel meet the above qualifications. Once a user has been approved, then this list is sent to the Channel Administrators who will give a final stamp of approval. If chosen, a member of the Voice Team will then get in touch with the approved nick and chat with them about the next step.
Approved persons will start at Level 20 - VOP Status and will need to abide by the following:

Requirements for HOP (%)

  • Agrees to Op in only ONE Channel (#World-Chat)
  • Note: Ops in other OFFICIAL #World-Chat channels is ok, subject to approval
  • Agrees to attend a minimum of [4] #World-Chat HOP Classes
  • Note: The first class will be an introductory class explaining in more detail these policies
  • Is willing to put forth effort to learn about their IRC client, and other IRC matters
  • Is willing to comply with the established Guidelines
  • Channel duties: Help the ops by cycling channel and greeting the visitors

Once the HOP (Top20's) have attended the four classes, have shown progress, and have an understanding of our policies, they may be moved up to AOP Status. This Level allows them to be opped by ChanServ. and to use ChanServ to kick and ban. Please note: The HOp is not a guarantee of a permanent @/Rank. It's a time for the new Op to continue to learn, and a time for the Channel Administration to monitor progress.

We will do everything we can do to help you succeed!

Op Status Requirements - [Top10]

  • Has attended a minimum of [4] VOP Classes
  • Has demonstrated progress in their IRC skills
  • Shows a good attitude in channel and in private

As the Helper Op has continued to make progress in their skills, and demonstrates good support for the channel and our guidelines, then they will be advanced to the next level, SOP Status.

Advancement to SOP Access is based on a variety of factors, some of which include:

  • Op Status Requirements - Rank Top 10
  • Continual progress in IRC skills
  • Exhibits a good attitude and professional conduct towards the visitors
  • Demonstrates good aptitude for being a 'Team Player'
  • Continues to be willing to work within the established #World-Chat Guidelines
  • Works hard and works happy 😊

If you're not intimidated by the amount of learning that will be taking place, and you are still interested in becoming a part of our VOPs, you might want to test your skills through a little mini-test that He-Man and Jae have put together.
